Audio Mastering: everything you need to know before releasing your sound
Audio mastering is the essential final step before releasing your music. Discover the key stages, why it's crucial, and how OTT Record can help you.
What is audio mastering?
Mastering is the final stage of music production before distribution. It's the process of optimizing the final sound of your music so that it's perfect on all platforms: Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, in clubs, or on the radio. Good mastering is what makes the difference between an amateur sound and a professional sound.
Why is mastering essential?
Many artists think that mixing is enough. But without mastering, your sound risks lacking punch, clarity, or volume compared to other tracks on streaming platforms. Mastering allows you to:
- Standardize volume and dynamics
- Optimize frequencies for all audio systems
- Reach the LUFS levels required by platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.)
- Give your entire project (EP, album) sonic coherence
Key steps in audio mastering
1. Critical listening
Before touching anything, the sound engineer carefully listens to the mix to identify problems: overly prominent frequencies, lack of bass, sibilance, etc.
2. Equalization (EQ)
EQ balances the frequencies of the overall mix. It corrects flaws and sculpts the sound to be pleasant to the ear on any system.
3. Compression
Compression controls the dynamics of the sound. It helps glue elements together and gives your music punch without crushing the sound.
4. Limiting and volume
The limiter is used to achieve the target volume (usually between -14 and -9 LUFS for streaming) without distortion. This is the final step that gives that loud and clean sound.
5. Final rendering
The mastered file is exported in the required formats: 24-bit WAV for distribution, MP3 for previews, etc.
Online mastering vs. physical studio
Today, it is no longer necessary to go to a physical studio to obtain professional quality mastering. Online mastering offers the same results, with more flexibility and often at more accessible rates. At OTT Record, we offer an online audio mastering service for French-speaking artists, with quick feedback and personalized support.
How to prepare your mix before mastering?
To get the best possible result, here's what you need to check before sending your mix:
- Leave at least 3 to 6 dB of headroom (do not saturate the master bus)
- Export as WAV or AIFF, 24-bit minimum, 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz
- Disable any limiter or compressor on the master bus
- Check for no clipping in the mix
