How to prepare your files before a professional mix

Why Is Proper File Preparation Crucial?

You've worked hard on your music and are ready to entrust it to a sound engineer for mixing. But beware: the quality of the final result largely depends on the quality of your files. A well-prepared mix means a quicker, cheaper, and, most importantly, higher-quality mix.

Recommended File Formats

First and foremost, make sure to export your tracks in the correct format:

  • Audio format: WAV or AIFF (never MP3 for mixing)
  • Resolution: 24-bit minimum (32-bit float if possible)
  • Sample rate: 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz

How to Export Your Stems Correctly?

"Stems" are the individual tracks of your music (kick, snare, bass, vocals, etc.). Here's how to export them properly:

1. Disable all effects on the master bus

Remove any compressor, limiter, or EQ from your master output before exporting. The sound engineer needs to receive a clean, unprocessed signal.

2. Leave some headroom

Your tracks should not peak above -6 dB. Leave some room for the engineer to work without clipping.

3. Export from the beginning of the project

All your tracks should start at the same point (measure 1, beat 1). This allows the engineer to align them perfectly in their software.

4. Name your files clearly

Use explicit names for each track: Kick.wav, Snare.wav, Lead_Vocal.wav, Bass.wav, etc. Avoid generic names like "Audio 1" or "Track 3."

Complete Checklist Before Sending Your Files

  • ✅ WAV or AIFF format, 24-bit, 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz
  • ✅ No limiter or compressor on the master bus
  • ✅ Minimum -6 dB headroom on each track
  • ✅ All tracks start at the same point
  • ✅ Files clearly named
  • ✅ No clipping (check the waveform)
  • ✅ Include a musical reference (a sound you like that matches what you want)

What Else Should You Send Besides Audio Files?

To facilitate the sound engineer's work, consider including:

  • The tempo (BPM) of your music
  • The key if you have harmonic instruments
  • A musical reference (an existing track that matches the sound you're aiming for)
  • Your specific instructions: what you like, what you want to improve
